Edit menu

The Edit submenu on the main menu makes it possible to add new elements, enrich them with components such as sounds or pictures, delete elements and edit elements. The Edit submenu is available only after you enter middle or professional levels (File : Level)

Here are the options of the Edit submenu:

  • Add a new item - add a new item to the current collection (Ctrl+A). An items is an element that takes part in repetitions and often has the question-answer form (see also: Topics vs. items). The items is added to the current category as selected in the category combo-box on the Tools toolbar (leftmost combo)
  • Add a new article - add a new article to the current reading tasklist. Current reading list is determined by the reading list selection in the middle combo on the Tools toolbar. To view the current reading list, choose Tools : Reading list (Ctrl+F4). For example, select some text in your web browser, press Ctrl+C, switch back to SuperMemo and press Ctrl+Alt+R to add the select the text as a new article on your reading list
  • Add a new task - add a new task to the current tasklist. Current tasklist is determined by the selection in the rightmost combo on the Tools toolbar). To see the current tasklist, use the tasklist manager (e.g. press F4)
  • Add to category - add new elements to the current category (as selected in the leftmost combo on the Tools toolbar)
    • Item - add a new item to the current category (category hook becomes the parent of the added item). The item, by default will use the standard template (i.e. two rich text components forming a question and an item)
    • Note - add a new note to the current category. A note is a topic that uses a reading template (single scaleable rich text component). Use this option, e.g. with Ctrl+N, to type in rough notes into your collection. You can process your notes in the process of incremental reading
    • Article - add a new article to the current category. When you press Ctrl+Alt+N, a new topic will be added. The topic will use the reading template. The rich text component will use the text currently stored in the clipboard. Use this option to paste articles for incremental reading. For example, select some text in your web browser, press Ctrl+C, switch back to SuperMemo and press Ctrl+Alt+N
    • HTML file - import an HTML file saved on your hard disk and place it as a reading topic in the current category. If you have saved the file with Internet Explorer as Web page complete, the accompanying files will be imported as well (pictures, scripts, frame pages, etc.)
    • URL - add a URL to the current category for easy access to web pages directly from SuperMemo
    • E-mail - add an e-mail text for incremental reading. It is recommended that you use e-mail headers for easiness of responding to e-mail fragments. For example, in MS Outlook, you can click Forward to get access to the e-mail text with the header. Here is an exemplary header (SuperMemo will use the address that follows [mailto: in responding to e-mail fragments:

  • Add to reading list - add new elements to the current reading list (as selected in the middle combo on the Tools toolbar)
    • Note - add a new note to the current reading list hook. A note is a topic that uses a reading template (single scaleable rich text component). Use this option, e.g. with Ctrl+N, to type in rough notes into your collection and keep them in your reading list branch. You can process your notes in the process of incremental reading
    • Article - add a new article to the current reading list. A new article task will be added to your current reading list. The task will use the reading template. The rich text component will use the text currently stored in the clipboard. Use this option to paste articles to your reading list
    • HTML file - import an HTML file saved on your hard disk and place it as a reading task on your the current reading list. If you have saved the HTML file with Internet Explorer as Web page complete, the accompanying files will be imported as well (pictures, scripts, frame pages, etc.)
    • URL - add a URL to the current reading list for easy access to web pages directly from SuperMemo reading list. You are most likely to use this option to add URLs instead of whole articles to your reading list. This way you can save space and import the article only then when its reading turn comes 
    • E-mail - add an e-mail text to your current reading list. It is recommended that you use e-mail headers for easiness of responding to e-mail fragments. For example, in MS Outlook, you can click Forward to get access to the e-mail text with the header. You can then select the whole text and copy it to the clipboard.   • Add components - add new components of different type (note that the Compose toolbar in the main window can be used to create components by drag&drop; this makes it faster to properly position components in the element display area). The following types of components can be created using Add components:
    • Image - image component for displaying pictures (BMP, JPG, GIF, WMF, etc.)
    • Sound - sound component for playing sound files (WAV, MID, MP3, Read Audio, etc.)
    • HTML - HTML component that can be used to display HTML files
    • Rich text - rich text component. Rich text components can combined different fonts and formatting but requires more disk space than plain text component (below). You can edit rich text components content with F9 (if you use MS Office, the text will be edited in MS Word)
    • Text - simple text component
    • Spell - spell-pad component for spelling exercises
    • Script - script component for animating other components (see: Using scripts)
    • Other - bring up the Compose toolbar with all other components that can be created by drag&drop
  • Delete element - delete the currently displayed element
  • Delete components - delete all components in the currently displayed element
  • Edit text
    • Edit title - edit the text of the element currently displayed in the element window
    • Edit first question - edit the first text component that is visible at question time
    • Edit first answer - edit the first text component that is marked as an answer
    • Edit all - switch all text components to editing mode
    • Add pronunciation - add a word-transcription pair to the phonetic transcription registry (only if this registry has been created using Tools : Options : Language)
    • Apply filter - process all texts used by all elements in the collection with a filter file (e.g. replace a set of strings with another set of string, remove delimited comments, move delimited comments to the comments registry, etc.)
  • Menus - make it possible to open currently available pop-up menus for individual windows or components
